What Are Eye Infections?

An eye infection happens when microorganisms get into the eye area and causes harm to the eye. Generally, certain regions are negatively affected by the infection, which include:

  • Cornea (the clear surface of the eyes)
  • Eyelids
  • Conjunctiva (the inner portion of the eyelid)

Three sources of infection can affect the eyes.

Bacterial

Bacterial eye infections are caused by bacteria. There are many ways that bacteria can make their way into the eyes, including unsanitized hands, flying objects, and other types of external materials introduced to the eye (like contact lenses). An overgrowth of bad bacteria can also come from a chronic health condition such as an autoimmune disorder. One of the most common types of bacterial eye infections is conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye. Pink eye is easily spread because bacteria can live on many different types of surfaces. It just takes one touch from a contaminated surface to the eye to catch it.

Viral

Viral eye infections are caused by viruses and are highly contagious. Although pink eye is a type of bacterial eye infection, it can also be caused by viruses. Viruses tend to spread easily and are a common source of infection in the eyes.

Fungal

Fungal eye infections are the rarest, but when they happen, these types of infections can become very serious. Many happen because the eye is injured by something from the environment such as a thorn or protruding stick. Sometimes people develop fungal eye infections after surgical procedures like corneal transplants. Again, fungal eye infections are not common but require immediate attention when contracted.
